Shane leads BetterComp's East Sales Development team. With 6 years of tech sales experience, Shane started with BetterComp in 2023 as an SDR and was promoted to team lead, then promoted again to SDR manager. Based in Massachusetts, Shane and his team help customers on the east coast explore how BetterComp can level up their market pricing and compensation processes. We sat down with Shane to discuss more about his role at BetterComp and his life outside of work!
Can you share a brief overview of your professional background and how you ended up in your current role?
I’ve been in tech sales for 6 years, but I started my sales career in college, where I did door-to-door and street canvassing for the Human Rights Campaign and Environment Massachusetts. After graduating from Simmons University, I managed teams in an ice cream shop and a coffee shop before shifting into tech sales.
Describe your role at BetterComp:
I manage the East SDR Team here at BetterComp. My day is usually filled with running 1:1s to connect with my team, holding mock calls, trainings, and team meetings, or strategizing about projects with the larger sales org, including rev ops and marketing.
What is your favorite part about your job and working at BetterComp?
My favorite part about being an SDR Manager at BetterComp is lifting up my team, helping them to be their best, and being a part of their journey as they grow. I started at BetterComp as an SDR and as I've worked and grown, I've been promoted and seen my role change - I love fostering that kind of growth with my team! My favorite part of working at BetterComp in general is the small startup environment where I can wear a lot of hats and see that I’m making change.
What do you like doing when you’re not at work?
When I'm not at work, I like to hang out with my partner and our dog Spirit. I also play in pickleball and cornhole leagues and have been a regular at our local pub Trivia for 10 years.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting in your field, what would it be?
You’re here for a reason: Tech sales is a tough industry to get hired in. If you’re here, that means that you have the skills and the intelligence and the grit required to succeed in this job, and you have people who believe in you and are rooting for you. Don’t doubt that you belong here.
Is there a piece of advice you received early in your career that has stayed with you?
During my door to door days, our mantra “one more door”. At this point, I’ve morphed it a bit for the phone though: “When you’re done… make one more call”. There’s some kind of magic in showing up for yourself and your goals, in almost calling it quits but then saying, “Wait, I have it in me to do just one more!" So many times, a meeting is booked on the very last call of the day, the one at 5:05PM after you said you would log off at 5PM. The sales gods surely look favorably upon those who show grit and determination - more so than this though, I think it’s a great habit to build with yourself. To push just a little harder, and show yourself you’re capable of more than you originally thought.
Share a couple of fun or surprising facts about yourself that your colleagues might not know.
I have a dual degree in Art and Sociology. Although my career is not in these fields, they’re still very important to me. I fundraise every year for a local nonprofit called the EMA Fund in Massachusetts, and I make a lot of art in my free time: screen-printing shirts, making pottery, painting, embroidery, shrinky dinks, my house is like a 5th grade art classroom.
What’s your favorite book/movie/TV show and why is it your favorite?
One of my favorite movies is The Digimon Movie. It has a killer soundtrack and is basically all zingers. It’s a must watch!
